At approximately 1:30pm local time (2:30am ET) a large 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck just west of Thailand, in Myanmar. It was close enough to Bangkok where many buildings in the city shook and some fell. Residents of the city center’s high rise buildings have evacuated their buildings. There have already been at least two significant aftershocks and there are concerns of more aftershocks. Buildings may have sustained significant damage in the initial earthquake and in the aftershocks that followed. Here are some of the initial news reports that are coming out of Thailand: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/earthquake-myanmar-thailand-77-bangkok-tremor-rcna198515

4:15am EST Update - All CIS Abroad students and staff have checked in and are safe. Students are not currently allowed to re-enter their residence hall. CIS Abroad on-site staff is in touch with the students. They have been asked to stay together, close to their residence hall, to await further instructions. We will update this page as the situation develops.
6:15am EST Update - Students are allowed to re-enter their residence. CIS Abroad's housing has been inspected and students have been given the all clear to re-enter their residence. On-site staff has warned them that there may be aftershocks, and having a 'grab bag' with all essentials, close to the door, is a good way to ensure that they will have all that they need should they need to evacuate again.
